SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY
SPEECH AND LANUGUAGE
DISORDERS IN CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
LANGUAGE
Language is a conventional system of arbitrary symbols that are combined and used in a rule governed manner for communication
Children with language disorders display difficulties in the comprehension, production and use of language to varying degrees and in any or all areas of Phonology, Seamantics, Syntax and Pragmatics
Pre requisites for (normal) speech & language development
a)Normal Vocal Tract
b)Normal Neuromotor Maturation
c)Normal Auditory System
d)Adequate Physical and Emotional Health
e)Normal Intellectual capacity and cognitive development
f) Nurturing and Stimulating Environment.
Emotional Fraction of Speech and Language Handicap
a)Aggressive Behaviour
b)Frustration
c)Anxiety – Hyperactive / Restlessness / Short Attention span
d)Guilt
e) Hostility
A Language problem may be defined as a disturbance in, or impoverishment of the Symbol processing system – The child’s supply of concepts and use of linguistic rule is either severely limited or is significantly different from the conventional usage of his peers. Thus disorder range from a very mild disturbance to profound or almost total absence of language
The two main categories of language disorder :- Delayed and Deviant
Delayed
i) Comprehension – Similar to Production
ii) Imitation Task – Simplifies Sentences
iii) Syntax – Age App. (Slow)
iv) Morphology – Age App.
v) Semantics – Age App.
vi) Pragmatics – Age App.
vii) Phonology – Age App.
viii) Prosody – Age App.
Etiology for Speech & Hearing Disorders:-
1 Hearing Loss ?
2. Delayed Maturation of CNS Neuro motor dysfunction or Deficit – Dysarthria, Aphasia
3. Emotion Problem
4. MBD Child – Learning Disability, Austism
5. Experience Deprivation
COMPONENETS OF LANGUAGE
1.Phonology
2.Morphology
3.Syntax
4.Semantics
5.Pragmatics
6. Prosody
SPEECH
Speech is one medium for the expression of language that obliges auditory input and vocal output
SPEECH DISORDERS
Fluency Disorders:-
1.Stuttering
2. Cluttering
Articulation Disorders
•Substitution
•Omission
•Distortion
•Addition
•Commonly seen in patients with dysarthria.

Deviant
i) Better than production
ii) Repetition of fragments failure to retain core meaning
iii) Unusual form of word order
iv) Unusual form of words e.g. Clo for clothes
v) Use of invented words e.g. Wib – to pick up
vi) Tendency to use memorized phrases, portions of sentences
vii) Unusual pattern. /h/ substituted for all sibilants
viii)Unusual stress and pitch changes.
